10 Things to Do When You Are Stuck at Home

By Laurie Corbett, Publisher, Macaroni Kid South Shore Boston January 20, 2021

We might not be stuck at home with a really big snowstorm this year but many of us are at home day after day with our kids due to the pandemic so we have modified our snowstorm list to keep you busy and having a little fun while stuck at home.

Eat Some Dirty Snow  - sounds gross but making and eating dirty snow is a memory-making experience for sure! Plus, there is no actual snow involved in the process.

Read - snow days are a great chance to snuggle up and read together or independently.  According to a Common Sense Media report published in 2014 "parents can encourage reading by keeping print books in the home, reading themselves, and setting aside time daily for their children to read." So, grab a book and take a little time to do something just for you - turns out you are helping your kids by doing it!

Teach Your Kids to Tie Their Shoes - seems silly but you can do it in less than a minute with one simple trick that we shared HERE back in August of 2017. If they already know how to tie their shoes how about decorating some instead!

Have a Dance Party - turn on your favorite music, get moving and make up for the gym workout you can't go to. Plus, you'll have a blast with your kids doing it!

Make Play Dough - there are a ton of different recipes for making your own play-dough. Two of our favorite recipes are 30 Second Peanut Butter Marshmallow Dough and Homemade Kool-Aid® Play Dough

Make Slime - feeling really adventurous? Take it up a notch from play dough to make slime! Our favorite recipe is Super Easy Fluffy Slime

Clean Out Your Clothes - while this one isn't a ton of fun if your dressers and drawers are bulging at the seams now is a great time to sort out clothes that no longer fit or aren't being worn anymore. While you are at it drop them in a Bay State Textiles bin to support local schools!

Make Snowflakes - almost any arts and crafts supplies can be made into a fun snowflake making craft sessions. Some of our favorites are 3D Snowflakes, DIY Craft Stick Snowflakes, and Snowflake Paintings.

Play Board Games - snow days are a great chance to play board games especially ones that take a little more time or have complicated directions you haven't had the chance to read yet. Find our friends at The Toy Box in Hanover's list of 6 games to keep you playing together all winter long HERE.

Set Some Goals for 2021 - we're not into resolutions but 2021 is a perfect time to brainstorm some goals. We particularly love family goals and our big one for this year is to get outside more.
