History and Friendship at Old Sturbridge Village

By Laurie Corbett, Publisher, Macaroni Kid South Shore Boston July 11, 2018

I have always been a lifelong learner, and it's something I work hard to instill in my kids. Being a lifelong learner doesn't mean getting the best grades, or taking the hardest classes it's about developing a curiosity about the world around us and always wanting to know more about it. One of the ways I encourage this love of learning during the summer is through our summer learning topics where my kids choose topics to dive into depth on during their summer break from school. For those of you who missed it, I talked more about it back in June HERE

My middle Macaroni Kid, after wavering between unicorns and crabs, ultimately asked to learn more about houses and homes. So, after reading some books about cave and cliff dwellers, we started to move into more recent history. I knew we needed a field trip to make history come alive for my budding six-year-old anthropologist and historian. While nearby Plimoth Plantation is on our bucket list for the summer we thought it would be fun to take a trip to Old Sturbridge Village and they were kind enough to have us as their guest for a day to experience the village and also The Charlotte's Web Experience. More on that in a minute.

Old Sturbridge Village is an outdoor living history museum that shares with visitors what life was like in rural New England in 1830. With our house loving historian leading the way we explored historic homes and learned about the variety of living quarters at the time, talked with costumed characters in the general store, learned about bank notes in the bank, helped twist steel at the blacksmith shop, learned about red clay pottery and fire kilns, and so much more. Plus, this summer Old Sturbridge Village together with Brian Clowdus Experiences are bringing the beloved story of Charlotte's Web to families at OSV's 19th century working Freeman Farm. An incredible cast brings the story of Wilbur, Charlotte, Fern, and all the farmyard animals to life in a spectacular fashion and leaves everyone remembering the importance of friendship in our lives. We all came away from our day at Old Sturbridge Village learning something new, but more importantly with a desire to continue to learn more. With so much to see we couldn't see it all in a single visit and we can't wait to go back!

Old Sturbridge Village is located at 1 Old Sturbridge Village Road in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. It is about an hour an a half drive from the South Shore making it a perfect summer day trip for South Shore families. They are open Wednesday through Sunday from 9:30 am to 5 pm. They are participating in Highland Street Foundation's Free Fun Fridays program on Friday, August 31st, and admission to the museum is free to the public on that day. The Charlotte's Web Experience happens at Freeman Farm daily at 11 am and 1:30 pm. The Charlotte's Web Experience is not included in general museum admission.
