Navigating Your Child’s Development Without a Handbook

By Lauren Ahern May 30, 2024

Did your child come with a handbook? If so, let me know who gave it to you and sign me up! All jokes aside, no two children are the same. There are checklists, milestones, and then there’s Google (....please don’t Google….) BUT, there definitely isn’t a handbook that’s going to tell you exactly how YOUR child is going to grow and develop. As an Early Intervention clinician, owner of my own child developmental consulting business and a mother, I know how difficult raising a child can be. I was fortunate enough to have co-workers in the field to call anytime day/night when my children were young because yes, I still worried. We all worry. My job as your consultant is to help you as a parent feel confident in helping your child learn, develop and grow. Together, we identify, educate, and strategize specifically for your family, your child, and most importantly, you.

IDENTIFY

During a consult, the first step is identifying an area of concern. Were you up in the middle of
the night worrying? Did you leave a pediatrician’s appointment feeling overwhelmed? Perhaps
your daycare brought up an issue you’re not sure how to address? Are you mind blown that
there are as many preschool options out there? Maybe you just want some tips and tricks up
your sleeve to tackle the next stage of development your child will soon enter? Together we can
identify the area(s) of concern you’d like to address.

EDUCATE

After identifying what you’re concerned about, I provide you with education about that area of
development. Often times there are underlying reasons why your child may be doing (or not
doing) something. For example, many parents are wondering why their child isn’t talking yet,
but, did you know that there are about 5 foundations of language that need to be met before a
child can actually talk? Understanding your child will help you better address their needs which
will impact their growth and development.

STRATEGIZE

Now that we’ve identified what you’re concerned about, and you’re understanding your child a
little bit more, we can move on to the best part, the strategies to help! I provide strategies
SPECIFICALLY for what works for you. Like I said previously, no two children are the same,
and neither are families! There are so many different people involved in our little one’s lives and
it’s my job to find strategies to help fit into your family, your environment, your life. I also provide
local resources that you may benefit from and can help you navigate through the overwhelming
amount of options/services there are for our young children!

Together, we identify, educate, and strategize specifically for your family, your child, and most
importantly, you. There isn’t a handbook. No two children are the same. My job is to help you
understand your child and what works best to help your child learn, develop, and grow. Every
child needs a hand to hold, now let me hold yours.
