Parent teacher conferences have come and gone. You are left wondering if your child is struggling due to learning loss related to COVID-19 or if they are showing signs of a learning disability. Call Abigail. She’s a mom, a licensed teacher, has her doctorate in education, trains reading specialists at the graduate level, and runs Cohasset Learning Studio.
Learning to read and write is hard work. The studio was founded on this idea in February of 2020. Our original mission was to support struggling students using the structured literacy approach. Many students who come to the studio struggle with literacy and many have dyslexia and/or dysgraphia.
Since the pandemic hit and the demand for personalized educational experiences grew, our team has expanded to support students in math, speech and language, occupational therapy, and executive functioning. Yet our core mission remains the same: untangle the learning problems of struggling students so we can design and carry out effective intervention plans.
Teachers’ Expertise
All tutors at the studio are licensed teachers and have at least one degree in education. The owner, Abigail Sullivan Ed.D., matches students and tutors with care. The success of the intervention plan depends on the teacher’s expertise and the chemistry between the child and their teacher.
Our literacy teachers use the structured literacy approach, which is required for struggling students. Tutors are trained in methods and programs including Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, Lively Letters, Handwriting Without Tears, and The Writing Revolution.
Schedule
Private tutoring happens after school or on the weekends. Some students even sneak in a lesson before school if they are early risers. Most families choose a tutoring time and stick with it all school year. Yet adjustments can be made at any time.
Getting Started
Many families choose to schedule an assessment with Abigail first. This allows the studio to establish a baseline of the child’s skills and begin to untangle their learning difficulties. It is critical that teachers understand the root of a learning problem before deciding on an intervention approach.
In other cases, families have already explored their child’s learning profile through testing and are ready to jump right into private tutoring. Or, some families choose tutoring for enrichment and homework help and there are no learning difficulties to untangle.
Either way, all private tutoring plans start by talking through your needs with Abigail. A complimentary phone call can be scheduled here. Families leave this phone call feeling encouraged knowing that there is a plan in place.
Lesson Planning and Communication With Families
We know that parents are interested in the specifics related to their child’s learning and progress. After every lesson, students in private lessons go home with a brief handwritten note about what was taught, what was mastered, and what will happen next.
Our teaching is diagnostic and prescriptive. This means that each lesson is planned based on how the previous lesson went. Studio tutors do not use pre packaged intervention programs. Instead, strategic lessons are written based on their knowledge of the student and their knowledge of the content.
Progress reports are offered seasonally and include a list of skills taught, observations about learning needs, and data on progress.
Our Clients
Our business has grown mostly through word of mouth. Satisfied parents and eager students share our story and send friends our way. Here is what our clients have been saying.
Parent of a 5th grader in Cohasset: “Yesterday I had C’s teacher conference. Her teacher commented on C’s confidence in math. She said that her number sense and math aptitude were both strong. Her teacher knew that Charlie had been working with a tutor and said that it was obvious because of her growth and her grasp of critical math foundational skills. I am so appreciative of the time you dedicated, patience you offered, and learning you led over the past year.”
Parent of a 3rd grader in Hingham: "I want to thank you for offering G. extra help. She is thriving, the fit is PERFECT, and she loves to go to the learning studio. I honestly can not thank you enough as she resists learning or difficult things and this has been life changing for her!"
Parent of a 2nd grader in Scituate: “I wanted to let you know how happy we are with our tutor and the work she is doing with our son. The progress we have seen with L. in both reading, but also confidence, has been amazing. We've also seen proof of this with his DIBELS and Star test scores in school.”
