Honoring Memorial Day With Your Children

By Kate Bray, Publisher, South Shore Macaroni Kid May 24, 2021

Helping children to understand the meaning of Memorial Day can be a challenge. With all of the outdoor celebrations, barbeques, camping and summertime kick-off events, the true meaning of the holiday can easily be overlooked. One of the best ways you can help your child to understand this holiday is to talk with them  - talk with them about why Memorial Day is a holiday, what it means to you and what it means to our country's history and our soldier's families. As the daughter of a United States Army Veteran, I feel so much pride talking with my children about their Grandfather. I emphasize his service and the commitment and sacrifice that he and his fellow troops have made, and continue to make for our amazing Country.

In addition to conversation, paying tribute at a war memorial also presents a good educational opportunity. We are so lucky on the South Shore to have the Cohasset Field of Honor®. This beautiful display of flags posted by the Sons of the American Legion on the grassy lawn between Summer Street and Border Street presents a visual representation of veterans and military who give Memorial Day its true meaning. Each Flag honors Fallen Servicemen & Women, as well as loved Veterans who’ve passed.

The gift of the Cohasset Field of Honor® display is made possible by donations, sponsorships and the work of many dedicated volunteers. You can show your support and gratitude by sponsoring a flag or making a donation.  Flags sponsored may be dedicated to honor our heroes, and sponsors retain their flags at the conclusion of the event.
