Learning Through Play at the Boston Children's Museum

By Laurie Corbett, Publisher June 8, 2017

I know all of the lyrics to the Elmo version of Drive My Car, by heart. When I was in college I interned in the Early Childhood Department at the Boston Children's Museum and our office was right next to the car in the PlaySpace exhibit. One of the two "radio" buttons on the car played that song. I loved my internship at the museum yet somehow only one of my three children has ever been even though we only live 20 miles away. It's been on my bucket list for a while now so when were recently asked to stay at the Element Seaport Boston Hotel nearby I reached out to the museum to see if they were interested in us visiting while we were in the area and I was so excited when they asked us to be their guests at the museum for a day.

From the moment we entered the bright and colorful lobby the kids were in heaven! We launched right into the Raceways exhibit where we learned about science and the laws of motion, followed by a climb to the top of the New Balance Foundation Climb for my oldest who was so proud of herself for being brave and climbing all the way to the top despite being afraid of heights! We all spent a lot of time learning about how to fuel our bodies in the Kid Power exhibit and I love that the kids just thinking they are playing when they are learning about how strong their bodies are and what it takes to fuel them in a healthy way.

We explored almost all of the exhibits but our favorites were exploring shadows and water in Peep's World, cooking in the kitchen in the Arthur® and Friends exhibit and shopping at the Dominican store in the Boston Black exhibit. I love watching them explore the museum on their terms and checking out the areas that interest them the most. There is even a section on the website with information for parents on what the kids are learning through their play in each exhibit. If you are looking for a fun adventure less than an hour from the South Shore this summer we highly recommend a trip to the Boston Children's Museum. Some of our local public libraries offer passes which help discount tickets so make sure you check with your library before you go. To learn more about the museum, their hours, ticket prices and more visit them online at www.bostonchildrensmuseum.org.
