Meet Sarah: the mom behind the beautiful South Shore jewelry line!

By Christina Skeldon October 19, 2021

Every week, Macaroni Kid South Shore will introduce you to an amazing, local mom. Nothing makes me happier than supporting incredible women and I am so excited to have the opportunity to introduce you to some of the South Shore's finest!

This week, Sarah Jean Gammon. Sarah is the owner and designer of the beautiful jewelry popping up all over the South Shore, Where Watermelons Grow. Sarah designs and creates each piece in her home studio in Marshfield. Her pieces are versatile, perfectly unique and influenced by her love for the coast. They can be dressed up or worn casually every day. I wear her back bay petite birthstone necklace every day and am always receiving compliments. I am also a big fan of her saltaire beaded wraps, they are simplistic yet beautiful and can be worn six different ways. Read on to learn more about Sarah, the charming story behind Where Watermelons Grow and her favorite places on the South Shore!

How many kids do you have and how old are they?

I have one son, named Sonny. He is 4 years old. I also have an almost 4-year-old dog, Tito, who believes he is my 2nd child.

What town do you live in and what is your favorite thing about the South Shore?

I live in Marshfield, Massachusetts. There are so many things I love about the South Shore but my favorite is the strong sense of community.

What do you like to do for fun with your kid/s on the South Shore? Without your kid/s?

There are so many awesome trails to hike and beaches to walk on the South Shore. I love to take my son on picnics to a new one each day during the week. We call it our picnic date. The fresh air and beautiful landscape give us both a nice break in the middle of the day. Without Sonny in tow, my husband and I really enjoy a good dinner at a local restaurant paired with a strong cocktail.

Tell me about Where Watermelons Grow and how it came about. Where did the charming name come from?

Where Watermelons Grow is a jewelry line designed, curated, and created in my studio in Marshfield. The name stems from the children’s song “Down by the Bay” by the singer-songwriter, Raffi. It’s a name that illustrates where the business began to where it’s growing. I started when I was young, selling handmade jewelry down by the bay on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. Today, it’s created on the South Shore of Massachusetts and is sold internationally online and in stores throughout the Northeast.

Does the South Shore have any influence on your work?

My love for the coast and its surrounding environment has always inspired my original work. From the rocky coast to the sandy dunes, the forests, and the warm community. My favorite designs are created with pearls and other natural materials or neutral colors and reflect a life well lived and loved by the sea.

How do you balance work and life? Or do you?! ;)

Balancing work and life will forever be a juggling act! But I feel this is most well balanced when I wake up early, stick to a routine, and have a well-laid out schedule. Thank goodness for google calendar which is currently reminding me to eat lunch.

Favorite places on the South Shore to:
Eat: Liv Creative Cuisine
Drink: Slacktide coffee by day, Rexicana Surf Cantina by night.
Play: Any of our South Shore beaches when the surf is good.

Thank you, Sarah!
