Hearts for Helpers

By Ms. Bethany, Child Development Instructor and Teacher March 20, 2020

I think such a gloomy time needs a special, heart-warming craft. My family has been thinking a lot about nurses, doctors, first responders, grocery workers, and all other helpers who have to leave their families to work. Every day these people take risks to help us.

When I saw a thread from the Scituate Town Library on Facebook about thanking our helpers with hearts, I immediately knew this is the day to do it!

Materials:

  • Contact paper (but you could use white paper and glue)
  • Scraps of tissue paper, wrapping paper, and/or construction paper
  • Tape

HINT: If you use white paper and glue, I like to put glue on a paper plate or in an empty, clean yogurt container and have the kids use a q-tip to brush on the glue. It's easier for clean up!

  1. Cut out hearts ahead of time on the contact paper or white paper. If using contact paper, peel off the backing. Place sticky side up on a table. Use a couple small pieces of tape to hold down the contact paper heart while the kids are working or else it will stick to their fingers.
  2. Stick (or glue) on scraps of paper. It's okay if the scraps go over the edges, you can always trim them up later.
  3. Tape your hearts on your windows. I also cut out letters to spell out "Thank you workers" for our door while the kids were working, but you could write this boldly on a piece of paper with markers.

I hope that this craft brings you and all the helpers joy during this difficult time.
