Back to School Traditions to Start This Year!

By Laurie Corbett, Publisher, Macaroni Kid South Shore Boston August 23, 2018

Back to school arrives in our house in whirldwind of back to school shopping, washing backpacks and lunchboxes (yea I'm the mean/cheap mom who doesn't let them buy new ones every year), haircuts, letters from teachers, trying to figure out which of their friends are in their class and not a small amount of nerves. My kids all love school, well except the youngest who starts Pre-K this year but I'm sure he'll love it too, but I try to make the days immediately before school starts a little memorable with silly and simple traditions and I believe it's never to late to give up traditions that don't work for your family anymore and start new traditions. So, we've chatted with some of our favorite local parents and rounded up their favorite back to school traditions to share with you! Happy Almost Back to School!

First Day Photos

"We create a chalkboard sign on the first day with the kids' grades and the date." - Kristin W.

"We always take photos on the first day of school in their new first-day outfits. I usually forgot the fancy signs but I love comparing the photos from previous years". - Laurie C. (Grab a free first day of school printable from Macaroni Kid here!)

"My sister takes a picture of her kids in a t-shirt with their graduating year on the front." - Jen H.

Fun Eats and Treats

"We have ice cream for breakfast on the last day of summer and this year I ordered chocolate dipped fruit as the first day of school afternoon snack." - Laurie C.

"The neighborhood moms have mimosas for breakfast on the first day of school." - Amy B.

"My mom always baked us a ‘back to school’ cake on the first day of school. Looking back now I think she was celebrating her own time freedom 😂 but now we do a back to school celebration with the neighbors on the closest Friday ... including a cake of course!" - Laura B.

"We have ice cream for dinner the night before and share what our goals are for the upcoming year. I record it" - Meghan L.

Books and Reading

"As a mom, I wanted to create a back-to-school tradition that helped my daughter realize getting ready for the first day of school could be fun, it didn't have to be a sad or anxious time.  When I saw how much happiness and positivity Mac brought her, I knew I had to make this tradition available to other children.  I get so much joy hearing families say that the book and Mac are making a difference - that's exactly the reason why I published the book!" - Kim D. (Check out Kim's book Back to School with Mac HERE).

"A few weeks before school starts we pull out all of the school-related books and put them in our seasonal book bin. If the kids want to read one they are there but there's no pressure." - Joe C.

"We love to go to the library and pick out new books about school. Our librarian always has great suggestions." - Jill F.
