Meet Your Librarian: Sharon Moody

Paul Pratt Memorial Library - Cohasset

By Laurie Corbett, Publisher, Macaroni Kid South Shore Boston May 24, 2018

It's been far too long since we shared an article in our Meet Your Librarian series but it's back and this week we would like to introduce you to the Youth Services Librarian at Paul Pratt Memorial Library Ms. Sharon Moody. At Macaroni Kid we LOVE our local libraries! They provide a free place for families to connect, learn and play right within our community. They are warm, inviting, and full of life thanks largely to our fabulous children's librarians. So, without further ado here's a little more about one of the people who keep the children's departments at our local libraries humming in her own words.

What inspired/encouraged you to become a librarian? Is there one specific moment when you knew this was what you wanted to do?

I began my career as a Kindergarten teacher! As a kindergarten teacher at the Joseph Osgood School, I frequently visited the Paul Pratt Library to choose books for my classroom. After moving to Cohasset with my family we became weekly library users. It was always a warm comfortable place for me. I became a Friend of the Cohasset Library and began volunteering at the library. I worked the circulation desk,in the Children's Room and began doing Saturday story times. Soon after I was offered the position of Children's Librarian and decided to make the career move.

How did your childhood experience with books or libraries affect becoming a librarian?

Growing up we were very lucky to be within walking distance of 2 libraries. My mother took us to the library often. I have some learning differences and reading was difficult for me. My mother wanted to ensure that I was comfortable in the library setting and exposed me to books as often as possible. I was a regular participant in the summer reading program. I met a wonderful, kind and understanding children's librarian one summer that understood my frustration and difficulty keeping up with the other kids in the program. She helped me find books at my level that were appropriate for the theme. It was the first time, I felt I had a chance at earning some summer reading recognition. She changed my perception of myself and made me feel valued for my perseverance. It was a turning point that I will never forget.

What was your favorite book as a child?

My all-time favorite is, Caps for Sale, by Esphyr Slobodkina

What is your favorite children's book, or series, now?

My favorite picture book series right now is Steve Antony's "Mr. Panda" and my favorite fiction series is the "Nocturnals" by Tracey Hecht.

Do you have a favorite children's author and why?

Margaret Wise Brown is my favorite children's author. The volume of her work is incredible and the illustrators that have been paired up with her are amazing.

What is your favorite program at the Paul Pratt Memorial Library?

We have so many fun and engaging programs every day that it is hard to choose, however, Monday music is Mamasteph is the best way to start the week and Reading Partners with Sophie our therapy dog can't be beat.

Is there anything else we should know about you or the Paul Pratt Memorial Library?

The Paul Pratt Memorial Library is a warm welcoming library that makes its mission to help every patron, young and old, find materials in whatever format they need.
