Jr Reporter Beat: Once Upon a Mattress

Macaroni Kid Jr Reporter Attends BSU's Family Performing Arts Center's Once Upon a Mattress

By Joe Corbett, Dad Reporter and South Shore Dad and Hannah Corbett, Jr Reporter and South Shore Kid January 18, 2018

This past Sunday I got to have a little Dad and daughter time with my two girls. We were the guests of the Family Performing Arts Center at Bridgewater State University for their final performance of Once Upon a Mattress, which is described as “Broadway’s freewheeling farce based on The Princess and the Pea.” My kids love theater and this show did not disappoint!  I knew we would have a good time when on way there they both were singing tunes from the last show we saw at the theater, “Seussical.” Our Jr Reporter, and my seven-year-old, was ready for the performance with her notepad and pencil in hand. She takes her reporting on local family fun very seriously.

The cast and crew of Once Upon a Mattress put on a great show. There was some serious talent in this cast and several of the actresses had incredible voices. Lisa Joyce was hysterical in her portrayal of Princess Winnifred, but Stephanie Blood's performance as the Nightingale of Samarkand stole the show for our Jr Reporter. She has decided her reappearance on stage after being told to leave was the very best part of the show. Who can argue with a seven-year-old?

The show followed the well-known tale of the Princess and the Pea but had its own special twist that helped in explaining the tale in a very amusing way. My kids have taken to quoting one of the more notable lines from the show “She swam the moat?!” Another sure sign they enjoyed the show. Bridgewater State University's Family Performing Arts Center is an excellent local venue for theatre and the girls loved having the chance to meet some of the actors after the show. BSU FPAC is easy to get to in nearby Macaroni Kid Bridgewater - Brockton's area with plenty of free parking and provides family-friendly shows for all to enjoy.
