Mass Audubon presents their Holiday Open House featuring Woodturning and Macrophotography Exhibits

North River Wildlife Sanctuary, 2000 Main Street, Marshfield
Saturday, December 6, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Free, open to all, no registration required

Every December, Mass Audubon is proud to exhibit and sell the beautiful and utilitarian creations of the Massachusetts South Shore Woodturners at North River Wildlife Sanctuary. We kick off with a Holiday Open House where you can enjoy complimentary cider and snacks, tours of our historic Nature Center, and activities for kids in our Discovery Room. We stock our Gift Shop with the latest and greatest field guides, feeders, books, and nature-themed gifts for all ages (many handcrafted by local artisans).

This year, we are doing all that and more! In addition to exhibiting and selling their wares, the woodturners will set up their lathes and provide onsite demonstrations. See firsthand how they transform ordinary blocks of wood into useful works of art. Admire the natural wood variations that are showcased in each unique piece – from bowls to pepper mills, pens, ornaments, jewelry and more – and take home some truly one-of-a-kind gifts.

And that’s not all! As you peruse the woodturnings on the library tables, enjoy an additional exhibit on the library walls. Milton Academy science teacher Linde Eyster shares a stunning selection of prints from her macrophotography exhibit Looking Closely: My Garden 2011-2014. Eyster has long been fascinated by looking closely at very small structures, and has published peer reviewed scientific papers including her micrographs (photographs taken with light, transmission or scanning electron microscopes). In 2011, inspired by an assignment she gave her students, she returned to “macro” photography, recording the fascinating details of small organisms magnified by a close-focusing lens. We hope you will come look closely and see these everyday creatures in a whole new way. All Eyster’s photographs were taken of live organisms in her small home garden, in situ, without the use of flash, over a four year period.

Looking Closely is on display now, and the woodturning exhibit and sale premieres at the Holiday Open House on Saturday, December 6, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Both exhibits will remain at North River Wildlife Sanctuary (2000 Main Street, Marshfield) until Christmas, and can be viewed during office hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
