Rib Cook Off a Success!

By North Community Church September 25, 2014
On Saturday, September 13, 2014 North Community Church held its 6th annual Rib Cook-off  at VFW Post 8453 in Marshfield, MA which was attended by 500 people (an all-time record) which helped to make it a huge success!

Thirteen teams competed for bragging rights and trophies.  They prepared and served over 2500 ribs to the crowd.  Teams started cooking at 6am and the gates opened at noon, the parking lot and cars were parked as far as the eye could see in both directions on route 3A.  The crowd stayed steady up to the end and numbered well over 100 when the winners were announced.  First place went to “Clyde Mavin and the ding-dong-dill-whackers” (Andrew Halko-Sheehan, William Sheehan) Sponsored by LMHS, P. C.  In second place was “Show Me Your Rack” (Mike & Whitney Crowley) sponsored by Caldwell Banker Norwell.  Third place and also the popular vote went to “2 Micks and a Mack” (Rich McDonald, Pat McDonald and Jim MacDonald) sponsored by Arbor Specialists of Marshfield.

A raffle was held in connection with a canned food drive for the Marshfield Food Pantry (two Bruins tickets were given away).  Over $300 was raised and two large storage bins were filled with donated canned goods.

Judges Roland Sullivan of Ro Ro’s BBQ Catering, Bill Shields of WBZ channel 4 News and Jeff Hills owner of the Healthy Appetite (in Plymouth) said that this was one of the toughest years to judge because all the teams had put forth some awesome tasting ribs.

The event raised about $4,500 for the North Community Church’s adult and youth missions.  These two groups have helped locally and around the country.  The youth traveled in June to New Jersey to help the ongoing relief effort from Hurricane Sandy.  The adults have been holding community dinners the first Wednesday of each month at the Church for those who are in need of a good meal and some company, all are welcome.  In the past, the adults have also traveled to Mississippi to help in the Katrina relief.
