Together We Did Something Great!

#MKDoSomethingGreat

By Laurie Corbett, Publisher Mom, South Shore Boston September 25, 2014
This past Saturday, September 20th, a few families from across the South Shore met Education and Interpretation Coordinator Meghan Connolly at Weir River Farm, in Hingham, for a family work day. We started our morning by learning about the farm, its history, organic practices, CSA, and how they give back to the community. We then spent some time picking a variety of cherry tomatoes for local food pantries. Ms. Meg even tasked each child to try a new color of tomatoes that they had never tried before. They all did! And some even found that they liked them.

After harvesting the tomatoes we headed down the hill to the barnyard where Ms. Meg talked about the animals that live on the farm, and introduced us to the horses. We were then put to work collecting eggs and laying new hay for the chickens. It was a great way for the kids to get up close to the animals and learn more about how they live.

We finished out our morning by learning about and feeding the pigs. I think the kids loved this best of all and they all asked really good questions about the pig, how much and what they eat, if they really roll around in the mud and more! We all left our morning at the farm feeling like we had really done something great by helping with their chores, but also by providing our kids with a better idea of how their food is grown and raised and helping them learn to be better protectors of the land.

A huge thank you to Ms. Meg, Weir River Farm and all of the families who joined us for this wonderful event! We hope you had as much fun as we did!
