MK Field Trip - World War I Memorial Park and Zoo

North Attleboro, MA

Last week we took a field trip to North Attleboro to play with the family of Macaroni Kid Attleboro - Mansfield - Tauton. It was our second trip to the park and we knew we couldn't keep it a secret from our South Shore readers any longer!

The park is located on a wooded hill in North Attleboro not far from the Plainville boarder. The park is maintained by North Attleboro Park and Recreation Department and they do a great job! There is a small zoo with farm animals and deer at the base of the hill. My kids love watching the animals, and feeding them feed which can be purchased at the small snack booth. You can also purchase snacks and ice cream bars there. The small zoo area also contains a bathroom, and small playground. Don't be fooled by the playground though there is a much larger one nearby!

If there isn't parking by the animals continue on the road. It will take you up to the playground at the top of the hill where there is more parking. Parking can be tight any day of the week, but keep your eyes open and you will probably find someone pulling out if there isn't immediately anything available.

The playground is giant and there is something for everyone! There are all types of climbing structure, slides, swings and more. My kids love it up there. There are also a few benches and picnic tables, but the shade is limited in the middle part of the day. There are a lot of shady places in the park if you need a break from the sun. There is also an outhouse near the playground for little ones who can't make it down to the bathroom by the zoo.

Just down the hill from the playground is a great sandbox. It isn't a traditional wooden sided sandbox, but rather an open sandbox divided by a pier like walkway. The smaller side has a wooden boat in it which was filled with water and sand the day we were there and made for the perfect place to make mud pies! The other side of the sandbox is larger with large rocks, and a water spiggot in it which create endless opportunities for imaginary play. Make sure you bring a change of clothes, and some baby powder,  because the kid will definitely be wet and sandy when they are done! (Note - baby powder takes wet sand right off!) There are also lots of Adirondack chairs lining the edge of the sandbox and a covered gazebo next to them.  The chairs are perfect for adults to sit and watch the kids play while being nearby. The gazebo was being painted the day we were there, but it looked like a great place to get out of the sun.

Between the playground/sandbox and the zoo is a giant slide! It is the biggest playground slide I have ever seen and my oldest (4) loved sliding down.

Next to the slide is a shaded grassy area with more picnic tables, and a waterfall nearby. It is the perfect place for a picnic lunch.

There is also an interactive butterfly water structure near the slide which my 2 year old could have spent forever watching.

Bottom Line - Plan to spent a good amount of time at the park or you won't get to do it all! Bring a picnic lunch, a change of clothes and some cash to feed the animals and have a great day!
