South Shore Farmers' Market Guide

By Laurie Corbett, Publisher Mom, South Shore Boston August 25, 2016
Our family loves farmers' markets because we love living locally! They are a great place to pick up lots of local produce, but there are also always lots of other local vendors - crafters, bakeries, and more! Many of the markets on the South Shore also offer fun, free kids activities and they are often cheaper than supermarkets because you cut out the middle man. Plus, visiting the farmers' market can easily become educational when you start talking about where our food comes from, how it is grown, etc. Chat with a vendor and they would be happy to give your child a mini lesson in their specialty!

Tips for shopping at Farmers' Markets

  • Bring your own bags. Many vendors provide bags, but reusable is best.
  • Ask questions! There are lots of options at farmers markets - organic, conventional, hyper-local (like us), or from a wider regional farm. Ask lots of questions and get what's important to you.
  • Bring cash. A lot of vendors accept credit/debit cards, but not all. Make sure you have some cash on hand (small bills is best) so that you aren't limited in which vendors you can purchase from. I like to give my girls a few dollars to purchase whatever vegetable or fruit they would like to buy. They are often much more likely to try something new if they picked it out and purchased it.
  • Have fun!
